Director Guillermo Del Toro creates an intro for The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror XXIV".

It's that time of the year again, when the jack-o'-lantern's come out, crazy costumes appear, the world turns orange, green and black and quite simply everyone goes bonkers! Yes, you guessed it, Halloween is indeed nigh!

Every Halloween as you avid fans of The Simpson's would know, a spooky special is aired. For each of those spooky episodes there are a few changes, not only do the characters get a change of outfits, they become different people - representing some person from ancient history or Halloween themed stories. The credits also change, such as creator Matt Groening's name becoming "Bat Groening".

Now in its 23rd year after launching in 1990. The "Couch Gag" sequence for this year's Treehouse of Horror XXIV (or "intro" if that simplifies things) has been specially directed by Guillermo Del Toro. And might I say it is pretty awesome!
The title sequence that usually sees the Simpson family en route home to watch television, has been extended and filled with references to Del Toro's horror influences and some of his own films and projects.

For the average viewer of The Simpson's it is pretty funny, but for a television and film fanatic it makes great viewing. Believe you'll find yourself shouting at the screen the references you can spot.

Some of the classic horror references include cartoon cameos from Alfred Hitchcock (The Birds) and Stephen King (writer of The Shining) and Hypnotoad from Futurama; horror classics such as The Night of the Living Dead, Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man. Science-fiction classics are also dropped in such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).

While Del Toro pays homage to visual effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) who sadly passed earlier this year, he also homages himself with imagery from his own films such as Pans Labyrinth, HellboyBlade 2 and his most recent, Pacific Rim.

To top that all of there are also a few references to two of the most talked cult TV shows of the moment, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. The GOT reference is right at the start of the gag, while what I believe to be a Breaking Bad gag is a little further in.
